Mezi California Privacy Statement
Last updated: July 24, 2026 · Supplements the Mezi Privacy Policy
This California Privacy Statement supplements our Privacy Policy and applies only to California residents. It describes how Mezi Inc. (“Mezi,” “we,” “us”) processes personal information under the California Consumer Privacy Act, as amended by the California Privacy Rights Act (together, the “CCPA”). Terms used here have the meanings given in the CCPA.
1. Personal information we collect
The categories below come from the statutory list in the CCPA. Not every item will apply to you.
-
Identifiers. Your name or display name, email address, phone number, account name, device identifiers, and IP address. If you choose to sync your contacts to find friends, the names and phone numbers from your device’s address book — used only to help you find and invite people, and never sold; we don’t retain the details of people who aren’t Mezi users.
-
Personal records. A government-issued ID, only if you choose optional ID verification. Payment card details are processed by Stripe; Mezi does not store your full card number. (This category is defined at Cal. Civ. Code §1798.80(e).)
-
Protected classifications. Your age and date of birth, and — if you choose to share them — gender, gender identity, or sexual orientation.
-
Commercial information. Records of your subscriptions, purchases, and membership tier.
-
Biometric information. The facial-geometry data (a “face template”) created during selfie verification, and your verification selfie. Our Biometric Data Notice describes this in full.
-
Internet and other network activity. How you use the app — features used, waves, hearts, passes, matches, events you view or RSVP to, and interactions with other users.
-
Geolocation data. Approximate or precise location for event discovery, collected only if you grant your device’s location permission.
-
Audio, electronic, visual, and similar information. Your profile photos, Vibes, videos, and verification selfie.
-
Inferences. Match and event recommendations drawn from your profile and activity.
-
Sensitive personal information. Your government ID number; precise geolocation; biometric information; the contents of your messages; and, if you choose to share them, racial or ethnic origin, religious beliefs, or sexual orientation.
Two categories on the CCPA’s statutory list do not apply to us: Mezi does not collect professional or employment information, and does not collect education information, from users of the Service.
2. Where we get it
-
Directly from you — when you create an account, build your profile, post Vibes, send messages, or contact support.
-
Automatically from your device — usage and technical data as you use the Service, and location if you grant permission.
-
From other users — for example, when someone reports you or tags you in a Duo or friend tag.
-
From our service providers — for example, the result of a verification or content-moderation check.
-
From payment processors and app stores — transaction and subscription records.
3. Why we collect it
We collect personal information for these business and commercial purposes:
-
Creating and managing your account, and verifying you are a real person who is 18 or older;
-
Providing matching, event discovery, Vibes, and messaging, and recommending matches and events;
-
Keeping Mezi safe — content moderation, detecting fraud and fake accounts, investigating reports, and enforcing our Terms and Community Guidelines;
-
Processing payments and managing memberships;
-
Communicating with you about the Service, including safety and account notices, and optional marketing you can opt out of;
-
Improving and developing the Service; and
-
Complying with legal obligations and establishing, exercising, or defending legal claims.
4. Who we disclose it to
In the past 12 months, we may disclose personal information for a business purpose to:
-
Service providers under contract — our payment processor (currently Stripe), identity and age-verification provider, content-moderation providers, cloud hosting and database provider, and analytics provider (if used).
-
Other Mezi users — according to your profile settings and per-event visibility controls.
-
Law enforcement, courts, or government authorities — where required by law or to protect the rights, property, or safety of Mezi, our users, or the public.
-
A successor entity — in a merger, acquisition, or sale of assets.
5. Sensitive personal information
Some information we collect is “sensitive personal information” under the CCPA — including your government ID number (if you use optional ID verification), precise geolocation, biometric information from selfie verification, the contents of your messages, and any racial or ethnic origin, religious beliefs, or sexual orientation you choose to share.
We use sensitive personal information only to provide and secure the Service: to verify you are a real person aged 18 or older, to operate the features you choose to use, and to keep the community safe. We do not use it to infer characteristics about you, and we do not sell or share it. Because our use is already limited to these permitted purposes, the CCPA right to limit the use of sensitive personal information does not change how we handle your data — but you are welcome to contact us with any request.
6. We do not sell or share your personal information
Mezi does not sell personal information, and does not “share” it for cross-context behavioral advertising, as those terms are defined by the CCPA. We have not sold or shared personal information for these purposes, and we do not serve third-party advertising in the app. Mezi is an 18-and-over service, and we do not knowingly sell or share the personal information of anyone under 16.
7. How long we keep it
We keep personal information for as long as your account is active and as needed to provide the Service. When you delete your account or specific content, the deletion process begins no more than 30 days after your request and generally completes within 90 days, with up to an additional 90 days to remove copies from backup and disaster-recovery systems. We retain limited information longer where needed for safety investigations, legal or tax obligations, or to defend legal claims. Biometric data is handled as described in our Biometric Data Notice. See Section 6 of our Privacy Policy for details.
8. Your California privacy rights
If you are a California resident, you have the right to:
-
Know and access — request the categories and specific pieces of personal information we have collected about you.
-
Correct — request that we correct inaccurate personal information.
-
Delete — request that we delete personal information we collected from you, subject to legal exceptions.
-
Opt out of sale or sharing — we do not sell or share personal information, so there is nothing to opt out of.
-
Limit the use of sensitive personal information — our use is already limited to permitted purposes, as described in Section 5.
-
Non-discrimination — we will not discriminate against you for exercising any of these rights.
9. How to submit a request
Email contact@mezisocial.com with the subject line “California Privacy Request,” and tell us which right you want to exercise. You can also review and update much of your information directly in the app.
To protect your privacy, we verify your identity before acting on a request — submitting the request from the email address on your account is often enough, though we may ask for additional proof. You may use an authorized agent to submit a request on your behalf; if you do, we may ask for written permission or a power of attorney, and we may still verify your identity directly.
If we deny your request, you may appeal by replying to our response with “Privacy Request Appeal.” We also honor recognized browser opt-out preference signals such as Global Privacy Control (GPC).
